Why Is The Pilot’s Cabin In An Airplane Called A “cockpit”?

As with many aviation terms, it has carried over from the nautical term for the steering station on a sailing ship. The crew member responsible for the steering was the Coxwain, so his station became known as the “Cox’s Pit” shortened to “cockpit”
